I am this close to drawing everyone with fish eyes.
Today I realized why I am drawn to Daniel Acuña's artwork so much. He renders an idea of form/volume through computer coloring (which looks really awful in a lot of superhero comics these days) BUT he uses a thick black line to flatten things out and reinforce panel composition. Ryan Sook does the same thing, but I just like Acuña's expressions better? Almost cartoony supermodel, and he sneaks in a lot of Felix the Cat lines.
Lastly here is the comic I did for the Subterranean Anthology. Not much, but hope you get a kick out of it!

Making comics right now is like standing on two galloping horses and I can't help looking down at that space between them. At least my hat hasn't blown off. |

EDIT: These spot illu's above were put between blocks of sassy "dirty" jokes. I was trying to figure out the artist and but I misread and ended up googling "LeRoy Miman." His real name is LeRoy Neiman, and he actually worked predominantly in color:

I can just imagine for the spot illu's they were like "Hey LeRoy! We got some space on page 110, can you just whip up something real quick?" Man! |

| Brain and brain what is brain |
[Aug. 4th, 2009|01:50 am] |
Amelia is going alright. Though, as the plot moves forward there are a lot more panels (seven or eight) per page then I am usually used to drawing (four or five). I'm turning to my superhero books for more research, which I guess is what I always tend to do. I think when it comes to finding inspritation I like to look at more of what's different from the kind of comics niche I tend to fit into? But then again just as much of what I look at is more a bridge between niches. Here are two guys I am really getting into this week.
Tommy Lee Edwards. So much of his stuff seems super-computery but that doesn't even register because of how he uses color on top of organic linework (which I'm pretty sure is also digital inking):

Olivier Copiel. I wish I could find a page of non-superhero characters (because he goes nuts on their designs) but here I think shows his slick storytelling and eye for character acting/nuances:
Wolverine tosses that picture and you almost miss it.
Last week I reworked the schedule for Amelia with my editor, so it's a little less crazy and I'll be done bookin just in time for 2010. Here is a panel, my brain already wants to redraw some things and that is CRAZY:
Easter egg: The girl next to the water cooler is based on a villain from a campy telenovela I would often indulge in:
This completes the tour of my brain at current. For more brainwaves, here is my twitter. |

These next two actually weren't free but were done for the Sketch-A-Thon at the Cartoon Art Museum Booth! The biker couple who asked for Betty Boop were AMAZING.

| comic pros and cons |
[Jul. 28th, 2009|05:01 am] |

Comic-Con was REALLY COOL! Even though there didn't end up being any Amelia mini's from Archaia after all, it meant hanging and helping out at the Monster Milk Cooperative booth with Zach, Tyler, Becky and Frank, Falynn, Ben, and Allie doing free sketches for people. I finally got to meet some rad folks like Dean Trippe and Jamie Dee! And I also saw a lot of cool friends, including Renee whose AWESOME NEW BOOK came out which means you should be buying it!!! Doing free sketches with everybody might have been my favorite times in San Diego, Tyler really put it best when he said that being around other awesome artists can be really nurturing and motivating. Also just being around my friends really makes stuff awesome again:
Now I am back home and trying to keep that awesome quotient up. I'm already stressin' a bit about Amelia, prepping some more pages and wondering how the hell there are three days left in June! Maybe I feel real intimidated again because work piled up after a week of Comic-con'ing and wondering about my own personal missteps with this project. But there's no dancin' around it, time to take the lead again. |

This is an old drawing. I'm off to San Diego today. Bad news, they might not have made Amelia mini-previews in time for me to hand out. But I'm not going to let that make me glum or nothin'. You should stop by the Archaia Comics booth anyway, there are a ton of awesome books there!
If you see me there or even just walkin around feel free to say hello! I'm not really doing any book work at Comic-con other than page layouts so feel free to ask me for a sketch or anything. See you in a week, friends.
